The Las Santa Cecilia song called “Ice El Hielo” shows a darker part of undocumented immigrants living in crowded homes and doing low-paying jobs in order to make ends meet and provide for their families. The song is more sorrowful than “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land”, and shows immigration coming in and ruining lives by making them. At first I thought that it was just an act as an example of what life is like for immigrants, but it was a real example of undocumented immigrants being and trying to make a living in America when so many people are against them and I think it can really help show many uneducated Americans about the ways immigrants have to live and maybe they will learn that immigrants are just like them and deserve to be respected.
“Ice El Hielo” by La Santa Cecilia is a song based on the real lives of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. The tone of the song is very melancholy as it portrays the challenges undocumented immigrants face in their everyday lives simply by trying to make a living and work in the country. The music video is used to make a commentary of the state of immigration and the lengths people will go to in order to provide for their family. More importantly, the music video demonstrated the threats undocumented immigrants face, such as being deported by ICE which stands for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and breaking up their families. The song depicts the problems of illegal immigration and proves harsh realities from the undocumented immigrant perspective. Overall, “Ice El Hielo” has a powerful message that brings to light the problems faced by undocumented immigrants.
I feel as if the song “Ice El Hielo” is the beginning of a long and dark story and “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land” is the more triumphant ending. “Ice El Hielo” by The Las Santa Cecilia is the harsh realities of how undocumented immigrants lived day-to-day and how it can both ruin a life and make one stronger. It also showed how America is a hard place to live for those who aren’t subjected to certain rights and equalities. Las Cafeteras has a strong outlook on the standing of those who are of the Latino descent. Both songs go hand and hand with how immigrants grow and get the drive to stand for what they deserve. The songs give insight to the close minded people that have the wrong perception of immigrants or Latinos all together.
The song, Luna Lovers by Las Cafeteras, is a lively and care-free song about two lovers and their affection for one another. Luna in English is moon, and the song states, “walk with me luna”, which shows how the two view each other as the moon. The symbolism shows that both of them view each other as the light that shines through the darkness. The two are not couples yet, the song’s lyrics say, “Maybe we can be more than friends.” Showing that the two are meeting and are walking “where the grass is green and the sky is high.” The song and video are both very whimsical and enchanting. The beginning of the song is soft and slow, but eventually the tempo speeds up and guitars start playing, and it sounds more like a Spanish song. The artists related to both English and Spanish speaking listeners by utilizing this tempo and instrumental change. The artists of the song show that they are Latinos, but they are also American, and that they can belong to both cultures. They are infusing American and Latino culture in the best way, and that is through the media. Las Cafeteras music helps Anglos learn more about the Latino culture.
Ice El Hielo is a depressing song about the life of an undocumented citizen. The song takes you all the way through the journey an undocumented citizen goes through. I thought it was interesting how they started the video by viewing the uniforms of the ICE deputies, and the video ended by them just standing in front of them with the ICE symbol very bold and center just like in the beginning. The entire song had a very mellow and calm mood that portrayed the depressing reality of the family that was torn apart by the end of the video. Another part of the video that I thought was interesting was how it gave the perspective of the ICE deputy. It didn’t portray him as mean or unjust in anyway, he was just a normal man going to work like everyone else. This gives the video perspective and validity in my eyes because the story is told from his side too, even ending with him showing sadness and remorse and the end of the video.
