Paper 2: My Family

October 3, 2025 by Brian Cope

Identify and analyze one to three thematic intersections between My Family and the short story “Barrio Boy” and the memoir Bird of 400 Voices. Any intersection that is evident to you is valid as long as it is observable to anyone else taking this class. Possible intersections include cultural geography, musical culture, visual language, social issues, and of course diversity, intersectionality, and othering. Analyze the thematic intersection in a way that brings into focus something that you find especially compelling or unique about “Barrio Boy” or My Family and that is not trivial in nature. Include a quotation from Bird of 400 Voices, discuss it, and use it to set up a specific part of your discussion. Review the article by Wuthnow and use a passage from it to set up another part of your discussion to receive bonus points. Incorporate a source of your choosing on redlining to bring into focus the systemic issues at work in two of the three texts to receive more bonus points. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to write an interpretive and comparative analysis that ties the three works together in a specific way or from a specific angle, and in so doing, present a well-crafted and developed argumentative position. In other words, your paper should have an explicit thesis statement at the end of the introduction, and the body of your paper should present–cohesively and coherently–evidence in support of the thesis.

Length: 3 double-spaced pages (by the end of the writing process)

Notes: 1) You will be required to do a revision of the paper after the rough draft has been read by the professor; 2) The same grading rubric for the first paper will be used for this assignment; 3) There is a reward for the first person who can tell me on Monday after returning from break the origin of the picture featured at the top of the page.
